Abstract

The age of SMK students falls into the category of adolescents who tend to need guidance and direction, especially in the school environment, namely career assistance that can be provided by Counselling Guidance (BK) teachers. Many adolescents tend to spend more time with their peers than with their teachers and parents. This research examines the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between counselling teachers and vocational students towards career maturity in terms of communication effectiveness in the form of openness, positive attitude, support, equality, and empathy. Career maturity consists of the elements of concern, curiosity, confidence, and consultation. This research uses a mixed method that combines quantitative and qualitative methods with the help of descriptive, correlation, and regression tests, as well as in-depth analysis through interviews and observations. The results showed that the communication intervention of counselling teachers was more effective in increasing vocational school students’ career maturity.

Prima Virginia, Universitas Pamulang

Prima Virginia is affiliated with the University of Pamulang, Indonesia, where she plays as a lecture at Communication program study and faculty with strength in basic of communication science, broadcasting, and journalism. With a strong background in journalism and broadcasting, she works as reporter at national television in Indonesia since 2005, with last position as Senior Producer for News Department in 2024. As a lecture, she works focuses on development of majoring in journalism and broadcast. She is particularly interested in research leveraging of communication theory, new media, media analyst, broadcast, journalism, and gender study, to improve and implementation of communication science.

Sri Lindawati, Universitas Pamulang

Sri Lindawati is a practitioner and lecture affiliated with Communication program study and faculty at the University of Pamulang. With a background as an education activist in remote areas of Indonesia with the Gerakan Indonesia Mengajar (Teaching Indonesia Movement) and community social activities, she focuses on education, teachers, and schools. She is interested in researching the contribution of communication to community development and empowerment.
